Night Rating Aeroplane and Helicopter

If you thought flying in the daytime was spectacular, wait until you see the world at night. It’s a totally different experience, and watching the sun disappear over the horizon whilst airborne is a special sight within your reach.

The Night Rating is an add-on to a PPL/LAPL/NPPL that allows you to legally fly an aircraft at night under VFR. This can be especially beneficial to pilots during winter when days are shorter or for cross-country flights that might stretch into the evening.

Requirements

You must hold a PPL or an NPPL/LAPL unless it is intended to apply for the PPL or NPPL/LAPL and Night Rating simultaneously. In the latter case, the night training is additional to the minimum requirements of the PPL course. If the student is an NPPL/LAPL license holder, they must hold at least a class 2 medical and have passed a colour sight test.

Flying Training

The Night Rating requires a minimum of 5 hours of training at night of which one hour shall be solo to include 5 take-offs and landings. In addition 1 hour of instrument appreciation must be completed if not previously covered, this requirement increases to 15 hours for Helicopters.
